Below is a description of the services I offer:
Copy Edit: $35 an hour
This involves a basic edit and proofread:
- Polish and smoothing out sentences
- Correct grammar, spelling mistakes, typos, faulty sentence structure
- Recommend concrete and concise vocabulary
- Convert passive verbs into active verbs
- Indicate areas where transitions are needed
- Revise weak and vague sentences
- Provide suggestions to reduce wordiness and redundancy
- Check proper footnoting and formatting styles
- Clarify complex ideas in direct and precise language
Note: for Academic Editing I will make sure you use correct citation styles. I am familiar with Chicago, APA and MLA styles, but have reference material available to me and can check any citation style you use. This sort of work is meticulous, and will require more time for me to complete.
Structural Edit: $45 an hour
Here I do a more holistic and comprehensive edit and look closely at the draft’s purpose and organization. This service will, in addition to the Copy Edit services:
- Evaluate the thesis statement: is its focus maintained throughout the draft?
- Assess the logic of the draft: are the arguments properly structured and convincing?
- Check to make sure facts are supported by evidence, research, statistics, etc.
- Suggest different modes of formatting and reducing information to graphics or figures
- Point out inconsistencies in statements or reason
- Re-organize and streamline the draft and recommending organization options
- Supply in-depth critique on the language, theory and themes used in the project
- Evaluate character, setting, dialogue and provide suggestions for improving a creative fiction or non-fiction work
Composition Coach: $50 an hour
This service includes telephone and email consultation in which we discuss your writing efforts. As I noted above, all my editing services include a no-fee 30 minute phone consultation. Additional minutes involve a separate fee of $50 an hour ($12.50 a quarter hour). I expect all coaching payment to be made in advance. This consultation will:
- Tease out themes and thesis and supporting those themes with appropriate detail
- Suggest techniques to help you move past writer’s block
- Discuss structural and organizational possibilities
- Clarify main points and how to better develop them
- Confer on how to develop the draft and where to insert examples, research and graphics
ESL Guidance: $40 an hour
As a former ESL instructor, I help International writers to use Standard English correctly and concisely, which involves not only me working and commenting on your draft, but also teaching you proper grammar and sentence structure. This service will:
- Correct sentence structure
- Insert proper punctuation
- Apply appropriate diction (word usage and vocabulary)
- Correct subject/verb associations
- Revise sentences for clarity and unity
- Suggest transitions and linkage between ideas
- Clarify concepts and ideas in a language that is direct and precise
Writing Tutor
With this service, I will help you develop writing and editing skills. I will either assist you with a specific project you wish to do, or assign you work to help you practice various writing techniques and methods. We will agree on the amount of tutoring you require in hours and what format you prefer (email and/or phone). The estimate will also include the hours which I plan to spend on commenting on your draft(s) (and of which I will keep a time log). I will teach you how to:
- Brainstorm, outline or plot an essay or work of fiction
- Develop a draft by adding information, examples and details
- Revise a draft to achieve clarity and unity
- Improve grammar, diction and sentence structure
- Use a variety of fun and effective writing techniques
- Write metaphor and description
- Build transitions, thesis statements, and topic sentences
- Structure and organize short and long drafts
- Create and manipulate character, setting, story structure and dialogue
